R E S O L U T I O N
|

|
|
WHEREAS, The University of Texas at El Paso's men's track and |
|
|
field team won the 2013 Conference USA outdoor track and field |
|
|
championship with an exceptional performance at the conference |
|
|
meet, held May 9 through 12 at Rice University; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Trailing the University of Houston by as many as 23 |
|
|
points on the final day of the competition, the Miners surged to a |
|
|
15-point victory to claim their first conference title since 2008 |
|
|
and the first under the tutelage of head coach Mike Laaksonen, who |
|
|
was chosen as the Conference USA Coach of the Year; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Leading the way for UTEP was Anthony Rotich, named |
|
|
the event's Outstanding Male Performer, who collected gold medals |
|
|
in the steeplechase, the 1,500-meter run, and the 5,000-meter run; |
|
|
also capturing gold for the Miners were Mark Jackson in the triple |
|
|
jump, Abiola Onakoya in the 400-meter run, and Mr. Onakoya, |
|
|
A-Shawni Mitchell, Carnell Horn, and Daniel Tarango in the |
|
|
1,600-meter relay; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Through hard work and an enduring commitment to |
|
|
excellence, the talented UTEP athletes realized their season-long |
|
|
goal of winning the conference title, and they may indeed take |
|
|
justifiable pride in their outstanding accomplishment; now, |
|
|
therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate The University of Texas at El Paso |
|
|
men's track and field team on winning the 2013 Conference USA |
|
|
outdoor track and field championship and extend to the team's |
|
|
athletes, coaches, and staff sincere best wishes for continued |
|
|
success; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for the team as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
