Martin Joseph Jones |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Sister Martin Joseph Jones, who died |
|
April 29, 2013; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1923, Martin |
|
Joseph Jones grew up in Houston and graduated from John H. Reagan |
|
High School in 1941; in 1943, she entered the Sisters of Saint |
|
Mary of Namur, and she pronounced her vows in 1952; and |
|
WHEREAS, This remarkable woman dedicated 70 years of her |
|
life to the Sisters of Saint Mary of Namur and was highly esteemed |
|
as an educator, archivist, and librarian; and |
|
WHEREAS, Sister Martin received a bachelor's degree from |
|
Our Lady of Victory College in Fort Worth and taught at parochial |
|
schools until she was asked to prepare for a new stage in her |
|
career of service; and |
|
WHEREAS, She earned a master's degree in library science |
|
from the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., in |
|
1956 in order to become the first librarian at the University of |
|
Dallas, where she served for six years; she then established the |
|
library at Nolan High School and served there for seven years; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, She taught for a year in Kenmore, New York, and |
|
then returned to her work as a librarian; she worked in the |
|
library of the State University of New York at Buffalo for more |
|
than 26 years and served there as head of archives, Special |
|
Collections, for two decades; during this time, she also helped |
|
to organize the archives for the Sisters of Saint Mary Generalate |
|
in Namur, Belgium, and for the Buffalo Diocese; and |
|
WHEREAS, Sister Martin was a warm and caring person whose |
|
outgoing nature and enthusiasm for life were inspiring; during |
|
her 70-year career, her love for knowledge and her commitment to |
|
her faith had a profound impact on all those who encountered her; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby pay tribute to the life |
|
of Sister Martin Joseph Jones; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
her loved ones as an expression of deepest sympathy from the |
|
Texas Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so |
|
in memory of Sister Martin Joseph Jones. |
