Dorothy Barbara Williams Bickham |
|
|
WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and |
|
commemorates the life of Dorothy Barbara Williams Bickham, who |
|
died in June of 2013 at the age of 88; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dorothy Barbara Williams was born June 19, 1924, |
|
in Oklahoma City to Beatrice and Edwin Williams; she was a |
|
graduate of Douglass High School, where she played violin in the |
|
orchestra and was a member of the Drum and Bugle Corps and the |
|
Girl Reserves; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She earned a bachelor's degree in music from Fisk |
|
University, and while she was studying for her master's degree at |
|
the University of Michigan, she met her future husband, Luzine |
|
Bickham; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, After their marriage, the couple moved to |
|
Houston, and Mrs. Bickham began a long and fulfilling career as |
|
an educator; over the years, she had a profound impact on the |
|
lives of thousands of students; she was a beloved teacher who |
|
instilled in her students a sense of pride and a lifelong love of |
|
learning; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A devout Christian who practiced her faith in her |
|
daily life, Mrs. Bickham was a faithful, longtime member of |
|
Pilgrim Congregational United Church of Christ, where she served |
|
as Chancel Choir pianist for more than 40 years; she was also a |
|
member of numerous committees and ministries and was honored as |
|
Mother of the Year in 1981 by the Servettes; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She was active in many community organizations, |
|
including the Houston Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta |
|
Sorority, Incorporated, the Friends of Houston Ebony Opera |
|
Guild, and the Parkwood Drive Civic Club; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she |
|
gave generously to others, and her wisdom, warmth, and valued |
|
counsel will not be forgotten by those who knew her; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, |
|
and she leaves behind memories that will be treasured forever by |
|
her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd |
|
Legislature, 1st Called Session, hereby extend sincere |
|
condolences to the bereaved family of Dorothy Barbara Williams |
|
Bickham; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for |
|
her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas |
|
Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in |
|
memory of Dorothy Bickham. |
