SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 59
 
 
  In Memory
  of
  Anne C. McAfee
 
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas honors and
  commemorates the life of longtime activist Anne C. McAfee, who
  died July 13, 2013, at the age of 82; and
 
         WHEREAS, Anne Elizabeth Castleberry was born October 15,
  1930, in Austin; she grew up in her Faulk grandparents' home in
  rural South Austin in an atmosphere where the important issues of
  the day were vigorously debated and where she developed a deep
  and abiding love of the nation's founding ideals and its
  commitment to justice for all; and
 
         WHEREAS, She married Bill McAfee in 1952, and the couple
  raised five children, Susan, Mark, Karen, Laura, and Nancy, and
  they were blessed with numerous grandchildren and
  great-grandchildren; together, they operated Futura Press on
  South Congress Avenue and published a weekly newspaper, the
  Austin Times, and a monthly magazine, Go Austin!; and
 
         WHEREAS, She began her long career as an activist at the
  age of 13 as a volunteer in the 1944 gubernatorial campaign of
  Minnie Fisher Cunningham, who had served as president of the
  Texas Women's Suffrage Association and who had played an
  important role in the achievement of women's voting rights in
  Texas two years before the rest of the nation made it the law; and
 
         WHEREAS, She went on to work for a wide variety of
  progressive candidates, from local candidates like John Courage
  and Maria Canchola to national figures like Ralph Yarborough,
  Henry B. Gonzalez, and George McGovern; and
 
         WHEREAS, An unabashed liberal, she championed such causes
  as ending war and nuclear proliferation, protecting the
  environment, promoting civil rights for minorities and farm
  workers, defending women's rights, and providing health care for
  all; and
 
         WHEREAS, She was a founding member of the Save Barton
  Springs Association and served for many years as an officer with
  the Austin League of Women Voters and the Travis County
  Democratic Women's Committee; she represented Senate District 14
  on the State Democratic Executive Committee; and
 
         WHEREAS, Anne McAfee was determined to see that America
  lived up to its founding ideals and upheld them for all its
  citizens; her tenacity and boundless energy in pursuit of that
  goal served as an inspiration to several generations of young men
  and women who shared her vision of a better country for all its
  people; and
         WHEREAS, A woman of courage, strength, and compassion, she
  gave unselfishly to others, and her wisdom, her generous spirit,
  and her enthusiasm for living each day to the fullest will not be
  forgotten; and
 
         WHEREAS, She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother,
  and she leaves behind memories that will be cherished forever by
  her family and countless friends; now, therefore, be it
 
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby extend sincere
  condolences to the bereaved family of Anne C. McAfee; and, be it
  further
 
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
  her family as an expression of deepest sympathy from the Texas
  Senate, and that when the Senate adjourns this day, it do so in
  memory of Anne C. McAfee.
