SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 98
         WHEREAS, The Senate of the State of Texas is pleased to
  join the citizens of Kleberg County in celebrating the county's
  centennial anniversary; and
         WHEREAS, Kleberg County is situated in South Texas along
  the Gulf of Mexico; originally inhabited by Karankawa and
  Coahuiltecan Indians, the area became part of the Spanish
  province of Nuevo Santander and later a part of Mexico; and
         WHEREAS, The county's modern history began in 1853, when
  Richard King purchased the Santa Gertrudis tract from the heirs
  of the original Spanish grantees and founded the King Ranch; the
  town of Kingsville, now the county seat, was established around
  the turn of the century; and
         WHEREAS, The county was organized in 1913 by the Texas
  Legislature and named for Robert Justus Kleberg; the county
  experienced significant growth during the 1920s following the
  discovery of oil and the establishment of South Texas Teachers
  College, now Texas A&M University--Kingsville; and
         WHEREAS, Today, the county offers residents and visitors
  alike a wide array of attractions, including the Padre Island
  National Seashore, the annual Naval Relief Festival, and the
  Fiesta de Colores; the people of Kleberg County are confidently
  facing the future while continuing to embrace their rich and
  colorful past; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas, 83rd
  Legislature, 2nd Called Session, hereby commend the citizens of
  Kleberg County on their many contributions to the growth and
  prosperity of our state and extend to them best wishes for a
  memorable centennial celebration; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared to
  commemorate the centennial of Kleberg County.
