R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Schwertner State Bank celebrated its 100th |
|
anniversary on July 19, 2013, providing a fitting opportunity to |
|
recognize this historic financial institution; and |
|
WHEREAS, The bank's founder was Adolph Schwertner, one of a |
|
family of Austrian immigrants who settled in Central Texas in 1877 |
|
and who donated the land for the town that now bears their name; in |
|
order to accommodate the financial needs of the growing community |
|
of farmers, Mr. Schwertner opened the doors of a new bank on October |
|
21, 1912; and |
|
WHEREAS, The bank continued to serve its depositors through |
|
good times and bad; when bank examiners came to check the |
|
institution's books during the dark days of the Great Depression |
|
and discovered that some local farmers might not be able to repay |
|
their loans, Mr. Schwertner put up his own personal fortune as a |
|
guarantee on their behalf; his trust in his customers was repaid, |
|
and the bank did not lose a dime; and |
|
WHEREAS, Schwertner State Bank has remained in the family |
|
through the years, and in 1977, it was purchased by Adolph |
|
Schwertner's grandson and current board chair Jim Schwertner; the |
|
institution now boasts a second location in Jarrell, and under the |
|
leadership of Mr. Schwertner and bank president Dale Hand, the |
|
bank's assets have grown from $1.2 million to $42 million; and |
|
WHEREAS, The bank's centennial celebration was attended by |
|
600 people, including many longtime customers and Texas State |
|
Banking Commissioner Charles Cooper, former FDIC chair Don Powell, |
|
Texas State Senator Charles Schwertner, and Governor Rick Perry; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, The communities of Texas are strengthened by the |
|
support and encouragement of locally owned and operated businesses, |
|
and for 100 years, Schwertner State Bank has played an important |
|
role in Williamson County; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature, 3rd Called Session, hereby commemorate the 100th |
|
anniversary of Schwertner State Bank and extend to the bank's |
|
officers, staff, and customers sincere best wishes for continued |
|
success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the bank as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
