AUTHOR'S / SPONSOR'S STATEMENT OF INTENT

 

Congressman Sam Johnson is a decorated war hero and a public servant from North Texas.  In honor of his service to the United States in the time of war and in tribute to his personal courage as a prisoner of war, H.B. 1534 will rename a portion of United States Highway 75 in Collin County the Sam Johnson Highway.

 

H.B. 1534 amends current law relating to the designation of a segment of U.S. Highway 75 in Collin County as the Sam Johnson Highway.

 

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

 

This bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, institution, or agency.

 

SECTION BY SECTION ANALYSIS

 

SECTION 1. Amends Subchapter B, Chapter 225, Transportation Code, by adding Section 225.091, as follows:

 

Sec. 225.091.  SAM JOHNSON HIGHWAY. (a) Designates, notwithstanding Section 225.001(c) (relating to authorizing a part of the highway system to be designated by the name of a person only if certain conditions are met, including that the person is deceased), the portion of U.S. Highway 75 in Collin County between its intersection with the President George Bush Highway and its intersection with U.S. Highway 380 as the Sam Johnson Highway.  Provides that the designation is in addition to any other designation.

 

(b) Requires the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), subject to Section 225.021(c) (relating to providing that TxDOT is not required to design, construct, or erect a marker under this subchapter unless a grant or donation of funds is made to TxDOT to cover the costs of doing so), to design and construct markers indicating the designation as the Sam Johnson Highway and any other appropriate information and erect a marker at each end of the highway and at appropriate intermediate sites along the highway.

 

SECTION 2.  Effective date: September 1, 2013.
