Committee Report (Unamended)

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE

The Purple Heart Trail is a system of roads, highways, bridges, and monuments intended to honor the great men and women who have been awarded one of the nation's oldest military medal, the Purple Heart Medal, which is awarded to servicemembers wounded or killed in combat. One stretch of the Texas portion of the Purple Heart Trail runs from Dallas to San Antonio, then from San Antonio to South Padre Island and from San Antonio to Laredo. Interested parties report that there are currently no other Purple Heart Trail designations in deep South Texas. H.B. 2424 seeks to make such a designation in the southernmost portions of the state.

RULEMAKING AUTHORITY

It is the committee's opinion that this bill does not expressly grant any additional rulemaking authority to a state officer, department, agency, or institution.

ANALYSIS

H.B. 2424 amends the Transportation Code to include the part of U.S. Highway 83 Business in Hidalgo and Cameron Counties in the Texas portion of the national Purple Heart Trail.

EFFECTIVE DATE
