A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to college preparatory courses offered by school districts |
|
for local course credit. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter A, Chapter 28, Education Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 28.0026 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 28.0026. COLLEGE PREPARATORY COURSE. (a) To the |
|
greatest extent practicable, a school district shall offer to |
|
students attending high school in the district a college |
|
preparatory course for local course credit in accordance with |
|
Section 28.002(f). |
|
(b) A college preparatory course under Subsection (a) must |
|
include: |
|
(1) guidance concerning the college admissions |
|
process, including: |
|
(A) information concerning institutions of |
|
higher education with a wide range of admissions criteria; and |
|
(B) the availability of various types of |
|
financial aid and the qualifications for obtaining those various |
|
types of aid; |
|
(2) instruction designed to prepare students for |
|
successful performance on a specific college entrance examination; |
|
and |
|
(3) instruction on various forms of writing, |
|
especially essay writing, at the college level. |
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2013. |
