A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
|
relating to limitations on student participation in certain |
|
|
extracurricular competitions. |
|
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
|
SECTION 1. Chapter 33, Education Code, is amended by adding |
|
|
Section 33.0813 to read as follows: |
|
|
Sec. 33.0813. SCHOOL DISTRICT POLICY ON STUDENT |
|
|
PARTICIPATION IN CERTAIN EXTRACURRICULAR COMPETITIONS. (a) The |
|
|
University Interscholastic League shall not adopt or enforce any |
|
|
rule that limits the ability of an independent school district to |
|
|
adopt a policy that allows one or more high schools from that |
|
|
district to sponsor academic or fine arts teams in |
|
|
school-sanctioned academic or fine arts competitions as |
|
|
representatives of their school on the basis of whether or not a |
|
|
competition takes place on a Sunday. |
|
|
(b) The University Interscholastic League shall not adopt |
|
|
or enforce any rule that penalizes a student competitor who |
|
|
participates in one or more academic or fine arts competitions that |
|
|
take place on a Sunday if their independent school district has |
|
|
adopted a policy permitting their high school to sponsor |
|
|
participants in Sunday competitions. |
|
|
(c) This section does not prohibit the adoption or |
|
|
enforcement of rules that limit participation based on academic, |
|
|
disciplinary or other relevant grounds. |
|
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2013. |
