A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
 
AN ACT
  relating to a postsecondary education paths pilot program in
  certain independent school districts.
         BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
         SECTION 1.  Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is
  amended by adding Section 29.9175 to read as follows:
         Sec. 29.9175.  POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION PATHS PILOT PROGRAM.
  (a) Using funds appropriated for that purpose, the commissioner
  shall establish a pilot program under which a school district
  participating in the program shall provide information on
  considering, selecting, and navigating available postsecondary
  education paths to interested students.
         (b)  The information required under Subsection (a) must
  include video tutorials, online resources, and a hard copy workbook
  to assist students in considering, selecting, and navigating the
  paths available after secondary education in:
               (1)  the skilled labor workforce, including
  certification programs;
               (2)  a public junior college, including the
  opportunities available after completion of a junior college
  program;
               (3)  a senior college or university; and
               (4)  any other available programs.
         (c)  A school district participating in the program may
  provide information to students in grades 8 through 12.
         (d)  A school district may not require a student to
  participate in the program.
         (e)  The commissioner shall adopt rules necessary to
  implement this section.
         (f)  This section expires September 1, 2015.
         SECTION 2.  This Act takes effect immediately if it receives
  a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as
  provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution.  If this
  Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this
  Act takes effect September 1, 2013.
