A BILL TO BE ENTITLED
|
|
AN ACT
|
|
relating to a postsecondary education paths pilot program in |
|
certain independent school districts. |
|
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS: |
|
SECTION 1. Subchapter Z, Chapter 29, Education Code, is |
|
amended by adding Section 29.9175 to read as follows: |
|
Sec. 29.9175. POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION PATHS PILOT PROGRAM. |
|
(a) Using funds appropriated for that purpose, the commissioner |
|
shall establish a pilot program under which a school district |
|
participating in the program shall provide information on |
|
considering, selecting, and navigating available postsecondary |
|
education paths to interested students. |
|
(b) The information required under Subsection (a) must |
|
include video tutorials, online resources, and a hard copy workbook |
|
to assist students in considering, selecting, and navigating the |
|
paths available after secondary education in: |
|
(1) the skilled labor workforce, including |
|
certification programs; |
|
(2) a public junior college, including the |
|
opportunities available after completion of a junior college |
|
program; |
|
(3) a senior college or university; and |
|
(4) any other available programs. |
|
(c) A school district participating in the program may |
|
provide information to students in grades 8 through 12. |
|
(d) A school district may not require a student to |
|
participate in the program. |
|
(e) The commissioner shall adopt rules necessary to |
|
implement this section. |
|
(f) This section expires September 1, 2015. |
|
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect immediately if it receives |
|
a vote of two-thirds of all the members elected to each house, as |
|
provided by Section 39, Article III, Texas Constitution. If this |
|
Act does not receive the vote necessary for immediate effect, this |
|
Act takes effect September 1, 2013. |
