HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION
 
         WHEREAS, The Fortune 500 company Alcoa Inc. is celebrating
  the 125th anniversary of its founding in 2013, and this occasion
  represents a fitting opportunity to recognize this pioneering
  company for its contributions to the prosperity and technological
  leadership of our state and nation; and
         WHEREAS, In 1886, the inventor Charles Martin Hall discovered
  an affordable way to smelt the semi-rare metal aluminum by passing
  an electrical current through a bath of cryolite and aluminum
  oxide; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Hall and Alfred E. Hunt incorporated the
  enterprise as the Pittsburgh Reduction Company on October 1, 1888,
  and opened a small experimental plant in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania;
  by 1895, the company had opened a third factory, and it was renamed
  the Aluminum Company of America in 1907; the name Alcoa was coined
  in 1910 and adopted as the official corporate name in 1999; and
         WHEREAS, In the years since, Alcoa's innovative solutions
  have revolutionized businesses from the aerospace and automotive
  industries to consumer electronics and packaging, and the company's
  leadership in sustainability and recycling has earned it
  recognition as one of the Top Green Companies by BusinessWeek
  magazine; it has also been featured for 10 years in a row in the Dow
  Jones Sustainability Index; moreover, the Alcoa Foundation has
  invested more than $550 million in local communities since its
  founding in 1952; and
         WHEREAS, Alcoa has had a presence in Texas since 1950, and it
  runs major facilities in Rockdale, Point Comfort, Waco, Wichita
  Falls, and San Antonio, in addition to several sales and warehouse
  locations; the company currently employs more than 2,000 men and
  women in the Lone Star State; and
         WHEREAS, For a century and a quarter, Alcoa has been a leader
  in American research, manufacturing, and business, benefiting
  communities and creating jobs and opportunities in Texas and across
  the nation; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the 83rd Legislature of the State of Texas
  hereby commemorate the 125th anniversary of the founding of Alcoa
  Inc. and extend to the company's management and employees sincere
  best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Alcoa as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  Legislature.
