R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Cary and Judy Griffin celebrated 40 years as |
|
publishers and owners of the Forney Messenger on October 15, 2012; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. and Mrs. Griffin purchased the weekly |
|
newspaper's publication rights and customer mailing list from the |
|
Dallas East Publishing Company on October 15, 1972; their first |
|
issue, printed when the city of Forney did not yet have a single |
|
stoplight, was six pages long and cost 10 cents; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since they purchased the paper, the Griffins, |
|
assisted by six employees, have never missed an issue; dedicated to |
|
covering the county's news, the couple not only own the paper, they |
|
write many of the articles and take the accompanying photographs; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Founded in 1896 by M. J. Cox, the Forney Messenger |
|
is an important record of the events that define Kaufman County's |
|
history, impact its present, and shape its future; in 1986, the |
|
Texas Historical Commission honored the paper with an official |
|
historical marker to commemorate its status as the oldest newspaper |
|
in continuous operation in Forney; and |
|
WHEREAS, The newspapers of Texas play a vital role in the |
|
political, cultural, and economic lives of their communities, and |
|
today, under the leadership of the Griffins, the Forney Messenger |
|
continues its long tradition of serving the people of Kaufman |
|
County; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Cary and Judy Griffin on 40 years |
|
of publishing the Forney Messenger and extend to them sincere best |
|
wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. and Mrs. Griffin as an expression of high regard |
|
by the Texas House of Representatives. |
