R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Hakeem Elijah Regis of Forney has achieved a
  significant honor with his receipt of a 2012 Texas Armed Services
  Scholarship; and
         WHEREAS, This prestigious award provides up to $10,000 per
  year to deserving students as they complete undergraduate studies
  at a Texas university with an active Reserve Officer Training Corps
  program; to be eligible for the grant, students must meet demanding
  academic requirements and commit to serving as a member of the guard
  or as a commissioned officer in the armed forces after earning their
  college degree; scholarship recipients must be nominated by the
  governor, the lieutenant governor, or a member of the Texas
  Legislature; and
         WHEREAS, A graduate of North Forney High School, Mr. Regis
  was a member of the Forney Independent School District Air Force
  Junior ROTC, an organization led by Lieutenant Colonel (Ret.)
  Evangeline "Van" Cheeks and Senior Master Sergeant (Ret.) Jeff
  Willie of the U.S. Air Force; during his four years in the program,
  Cadet Regis held the rank of group commander and participated in the
  color guard, and he attended the program's Cadet Command and Staff
  School on two occasions; he was also selected to attend the National
  Youth Leadership Forum on National Security; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Regis distinguished himself in numerous other
  ways during his high school career; elected president of the senior
  class and captain of the track team, he won district titles in the
  high jump, triple jump, and 300-meter hurdles, in addition to
  earning a starting position as wide receiver on the football team in
  his sophomore year; he also boosted school spirit in his role as a
  team mascot, founded and served as president of the North Forney
  Falconaiders, and worked as a Forney ISD student school technician;
  and
         WHEREAS, His accomplishments were recognized with the North
  Forney High School Top Performer Award, the Cocurricular Leadership
  Award, and the American Legion Scholastic Award, and he earned
  ribbons for community service, dress and appearance, attendance,
  and achievement; in all his endeavors, he enjoys the support of his
  parents, Maggie and Andrew Mitchell; and
         WHEREAS, The responsibility and commitment to excellence
  that Hakeem Regis has demonstrated in his academic and
  extracurricular activities are qualities that reflect the highest
  standards of this nation's armed forces and that presage limitless
  opportunities for this outstanding young Texan; now, therefore, be
  it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Hakeem Elijah Regis on his receipt
  of a Texas Armed Services Scholarship and that he be extended
  sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Regis as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
