R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Countless lives were touched by the dedication and
  generosity of Dr. John Norbert Marx of Lubbock, who passed away on
  December 13, 2012, at the age of 75; and
         WHEREAS, Born on October 31, 1937, in Columbus, Ohio, John
  Marx was the son of John and Cecelia Marx; he developed a strong
  interest in science at an early age, and he grew tomatoes to sell to
  raise money for his first telescope; and
         WHEREAS, He graduated from Waterbury High School in Nebraska
  and studied for a time at Wayne State Teacher's College before
  earning a bachelor's degree with high honors in chemistry at St.
  Benedict's College in Kansas in 1962; three years later, he
  received a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Kansas and
  went on to pursue postdoctoral work at Cambridge University in
  England and at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Marx enjoyed a long and rewarding career at
  Texas Tech University in Lubbock, arriving there in 1967 and
  retiring in 2004 as an associate professor emeritus; during his
  37-year tenure, he advised many graduate students, and he continued
  to serve as a tutor well after retirement; Dr. Marx loved to teach,
  whether he was working with students in a one-room schoolhouse in
  rural Nebraska, where he began his career, or with Boy Scouts eager
  to earn merit badges in astronomy and chemistry; and
         WHEREAS, A longtime assistant scoutmaster with Boy Scout
  Troop No. 157, he was a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow
  and a recipient of the Silver Beaver award; moreover, for half a
  century he belonged to the American Chemical Society and served the
  organization in a number of regional leadership roles; in addition,
  he enjoyed collecting science fiction and was a fan of the Lubbock
  Symphony Orchestra and the local public radio station; Dr. Marx
  also served as a lector and Eucharistic minister at Christ the King
  Cathedral; and
         WHEREAS, He married the love of his life, Patricia Colleen
  Loyd, in 1974, and they were blessed with two beloved children,
  Ruthie and Sam; and
         WHEREAS, Although John Marx is greatly missed, he leaves
  behind a legacy that will be forever treasured by all those who were
  privileged to share in his life; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. John Norbert
  Marx and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to
  his wife, Pat Marx; to his daughter, Ruthie Marx, and Matt Tyler; to
  his son, Sam Marx, and his wife, Salima Alikahn; to his siblings,
  Rosie, Mary, Margaret, Susie and her husband, Dan, and Nick and his
  wife, Mary; and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Dr. John
  Norbert Marx.
