R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, In December 2012, the pioneering El Paso television |
|
station, KDBC, celebrated the 60th anniversary of its inaugural |
|
broadcast; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Roderick Broadcasting Corporation obtained a |
|
television license from the Federal Communications Commission in |
|
1952 and began construction on a TV station with the same call |
|
letters as its radio station, KROD; when it went on the air on |
|
December 14 of that year, KROD-TV became El Paso's first television |
|
station; and |
|
WHEREAS, KROD-TV initially broadcast only from 4 p.m. to 11 |
|
p.m. on weekdays and from 1:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sundays, with such |
|
early programming as the children's shows, Red Brown and Anna Lee |
|
and Bozo's Big Top, and a wrestling program, Mitchell's Mat Time; |
|
the station was originally affiliated with three networks, CBS |
|
Broadcasting, Inc., American Broadcasting Company (ABC), and |
|
DuMont Television Network, but for most of its existence, the |
|
station has been El Paso's CBS affiliate; and |
|
WHEREAS, The station's call letters were changed to KDBC in |
|
1973 when the station was purchased by the Doubleday Broadcasting |
|
Company, and since 2009, KDBC has been owned by the Titan TV |
|
Broadcast Group; that same year, the station became the first in El |
|
Paso to broadcast a digital-only signal and the third station to air |
|
its news broadcast in the high definition format; and |
|
WHEREAS, For six decades, since the dawn of television |
|
broadcasting in West Texas, KDBC has been a reliable source of news, |
|
sports, and entertainment for the people of El Paso, and today the |
|
station continues to enrich and enlighten its community; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate the 60th anniversary of KDBC-TV in |
|
El Paso and extend to the station's owners and staff sincere best |
|
wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the station as an expression of high regard by the |
|
Texas House of Representatives. |
