WHEREAS, The Student Spaceflight Experiments Program has
selected an experiment designed by fifth grade students from Willis
Independent School District to be conducted on the International
  Space Station; and
WHEREAS, Established to promote the sciences, the SSEP is a
national competition in which students from across the country
design and write proposals for experiments to be conducted in
microgravity; there is a multistep selection process similar to the
review procedures that professional scientists follow for funding,
and a local review board chooses three finalist applications from
the community to be judged by experts at the national level; and
WHEREAS, Danielle Pierce of Turner Elementary, Daniel Perez
of Hardy Elementary, and Kalysta Gutierrez, Leiloni Zachary, Safira
Reyes, and Selma Nieniel of Parmley Elementary submitted a winning
proposal concerning whether savoy cabbage seeds can germinate in
microgravity; the fifth graders chose this plant because of its
nutritional value and the potential benefits it could confer on
  astronauts' diets; and
WHEREAS, In posing a useful question, designing a workable
experiment, and effectively communicating their justifications,
these outstanding young Texans have demonstrated impressive
critical thinking, and they truly merit special recognition for
their initiative and achievement; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby congratulate Danielle Pierce, Daniel Perez,
Kalysta Gutierrez, Leiloni Zachary, Safira Reyes, and Selma Nieniel
on the selection of their science project by the Student
Spaceflight Experiments Program to be conducted on the
International Space Station; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That official copies of this resolution be prepared
for the students, their schools, and Willis ISD as an expression of
high regard by the Texas House of Representatives.
