R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Drayton McLane, Jr., has received the Mirabeau |
|
B. Lamar Medal for his dedication to the advancement of higher |
|
education in Texas; and |
|
WHEREAS, Presented each year by the Council of Public |
|
University Presidents and Chancellors, the Independent Colleges |
|
and Universities of Texas, and the Texas Association of Community |
|
Colleges, the Mirabeau B. Lamar Medal was created in 1977 to |
|
recognize individuals, foundations, and organizations that have |
|
made extraordinary contributions to higher education in the Lone |
|
Star State; previous recipients of this prestigious award include |
|
Professor Barbara Jordan and Lieutenant Governor Bob Bullock; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. McLane was nominated for the Lamar medal by the |
|
presidents of Baylor University and the University of Mary-Hardin |
|
Baylor for his outstanding financial support of those institutions; |
|
his recent gifts toward the construction of new football stadiums |
|
at both BU and UMHB are the largest in the history of both schools; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Further evidence of this dynamic Texan's largesse to |
|
the academic community can be found in his donations to Austin |
|
College, Dallas Baptist University, Temple College, and the Baylor |
|
College of Medicine, where he sits on the board of trustees; he is |
|
also a board director for the Bush School of Government and Public |
|
Service at Texas A&M University and a member of the University |
|
Cancer Foundation Board of Visitors with The University of Texas |
|
M. D. Anderson Cancer Center; and |
|
WHEREAS, Drayton McLane earned his bachelor's degree from |
|
Baylor in 1958 and completed a master's degree at Michigan State |
|
University the following year; today, he is chair of the McLane |
|
Group and CEO of McLane Advanced Technologies; inducted into the |
|
Texas Business Hall of Fame in 1992, he has also been recognized for |
|
his civic achievements with numerous awards from city governments, |
|
youth groups, industry associations, and student societies; and |
|
WHEREAS, Through his passionate commitment to education and |
|
his enduring generosity, Drayton McLane, Jr., has enriched the |
|
scholastic experiences of countless students and contributed |
|
immeasurably to developing the human resources of the Lone Star |
|
State; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commend Drayton McLane, Jr., for his significant |
|
contributions to higher education and congratulate him on receiving |
|
the Mirabeau B. Lamar Medal; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mr. McLane as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
