R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, With her retirement as president and chief executive
  officer of the Government Employees Credit Union on March 31, 2012,
  Harriet May concluded an outstanding career that spanned nearly
  four decades; and
         WHEREAS, Harriet May joined GECU in 1974, and over the course
  of her tenure, she has been instrumental in furthering the credit
  union's mission of helping people realize their financial goals;
  implementing programs to benefit the working poor and minorities,
  she initiated a home mortgage program for qualified low-income
  residents, launched an international remittance program enabling
  workers to send money to their families, and focused on offering
  credit union services to the fast-growing Hispanic market; and
         WHEREAS, Appointed CEO of the organization in 1996, Ms. May
  helped establish GECU as one of the largest independent financial
  institutions in El Paso; at the time of her retirement, GECU
  employed some 720 area residents, held assets of $1.8 billion, and
  injected an estimated $125 million annually into the El Paso
  economy; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. May has been recognized with Distinguished
  Service Awards from the World Council of Credit Unions and from the
  El Paso Chapter of Credit Unions; a member of the Texas Credit Union
  Hall of Fame, she served as chair of the Credit Union National
  Association and the Texas Credit Union League and as president of
  the El Paso Chapter of Credit Unions; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. May's professionalism and dedication to
  excellence have greatly benefited the more than 300,000 members of
  GECU, and she may indeed reflect with pride on the respect and
  admiration she earned over the course of a career well spent; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Harriet May on her retirement as
  president and CEO of the Government Employees Credit Union and
  extend to her sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. May as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
