R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Beatrice Lehman Green of Houston, who has made many |
|
notable contributions to her community over the years, is |
|
celebrating her 100th birthday on March 1, 2013, and this milestone |
|
is indeed deserving of special recognition; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Mansura, Louisiana, Mrs. Green studied |
|
education at Concordia College in Alabama; she moved to Houston in |
|
the late 1930s and married Allie Charles Green, with whom she shared |
|
60 years of joyful marriage until his passing in 2001; they became |
|
the parents of a daughter, and over the years, Mrs. Green's family |
|
has grown to include a granddaughter, 3 great-grandchildren, 3 |
|
great-grandchildren-in-law, and 11 great-great-grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Green cofounded Holy Cross Lutheran Church, the |
|
first African American Lutheran church in Texas, in Houston in |
|
1939; she has participated in the church choir, the Lutheran |
|
Women's Missionary League, the Altar Guild, Bible Class, and Sunday |
|
school; and |
|
WHEREAS, During the Great Depression, Mrs. Green accepted a |
|
position in the home of James Baker, Jr., caring for the family's |
|
two children, one of whom, James Baker III, eventually served this |
|
country as secretary of the treasury and as secretary of state; Mrs. |
|
Green remained with the Baker family for 40 years, later becoming |
|
Mrs. Baker's personal secretary; and |
|
WHEREAS, A longtime advocate for social justice, Bea Green |
|
played an active role in the Civil Rights movement, at one point |
|
taking part in a sit-in at the State Capitol; she also worked |
|
extensively with the Women's Activities Department of the AFL-CIO |
|
and served as secretary of the Harris County Council of |
|
Organizations; in addition, she worked with the Model Cities |
|
program, served as a board member for the Blue Triangle Branch of |
|
the YWCA, and for many years held the post of assistant precinct |
|
judge for Precinct No. 247; she has been affiliated with the Third |
|
Ward Community Club, Magnolia Garden Club, and Entre-Nous Club; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Green is an avid reader, and she delights in |
|
visiting on the phone with relatives and friends; she also enjoys |
|
going to church functions, luncheons, museums, plays, family |
|
gatherings, and line dancing events, and she has been chosen by the |
|
Third Ward Line Dancers to serve as their mascot; and |
|
WHEREAS, Blessed with the affection of many loved ones and |
|
sustained by her strong faith, Bea Green has gracefully reached the |
|
century mark and continues to enrich the lives of all who are |
|
fortunate enough to know her; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Beatrice Lehman Green on the |
|
occasion of her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes |
|
for continued happiness; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mrs. Green as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
