R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The citizens of San Angelo lost one of their most
  admired business and community leaders with the death of John Stark
  Cargile on February 5, 2011, at the age of 85; and
         WHEREAS, The son of Frank and Estelle Cargile, John Cargile
  was born on June 4, 1925, and grew up in San Angelo; he served as an
  officer in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and after his
  discharge from the military, he enrolled at The University of Texas
  at Austin; graduating in 1948, he returned to his hometown, where he
  embarked on a long and rewarding career in ranching; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Cargile purchased the Producers Livestock
  Auction in partnership with his father and sister in 1954; through
  hard work, he built the enterprise into one of the largest livestock
  auctions in the nation, and today the business still ranks as one of
  the country's biggest sellers of cattle, sheep, and goats; along
  the way, this esteemed Texan was praised for his conservation
  efforts and his pioneering work in brush eradication and earned a
  reputation for integrity and fairness; and
         WHEREAS, Active in the ranching community, Mr. Cargile served
  as president of the Texas Sheep and Goat Raisers Association and the
  Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association; other groups
  benefiting from his expertise included the National Wool Growers
  Association, the National Cattlemen's Association, and the Texas
  Animal Health Commission; named Man of the Year in Texas
  Agriculture by the Texas County Agricultural Agents Association, he
  also won the National Golden Spur Award as the nation's top rancher
  in 1993; and
         WHEREAS, Mr. Cargile possessed a deep sense of civic pride,
  and through the years he worked with the United Way, the West Texas
  Boys Ranch, the San Angelo Board of City Development, and numerous
  boards of local bank and insurance companies; known for his
  humility and his preference to work quietly behind the scenes, he
  was nonetheless recognized as the San Angelo Citizen of the Year in
  1972; he was also a valued member of First Presbyterian Church; and
         WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, Mr. Cargile shared nearly six
  decades with his wife, the former Clara Pope Willoughby, and over
  the years, they became the proud parents of a son, John, and three
  daughters, Ruth, Patricia, and Martha; and
         WHEREAS, John Cargile lived a life that was rich in personal
  and professional achievements, and he leaves behind a legacy that
  will forever inspire all who had the good fortune to know him; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of John Stark Cargile
  and extend sincere condolences to his many loved ones; and, be it
  further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of John Stark
  Cargile.
