R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Charles Wayne Smith, a longtime coach and
  administrator in the San Angelo school district, passed away on
  December 26, 2011, at the age of 78, leaving his loved ones to
  reflect on a life that was rich in meaningful accomplishments; and
         WHEREAS, The youngest of 10 children, Chuck Smith was born on
  April 6, 1933, in Sweetwater to Paul and Allie Smith; his family
  subsequently moved to Sunnymead, California, and he spent the rest
  of his youth there, graduating from Riverside Polytechnic High
  School; he returned to Texas to attend college at Abilene Christian
  University on a football and track scholarship, and while a student
  there he met his future wife, Patricia Anne Horton; following
  college, he played professional football with the San Francisco
  49ers, and he and Miss Horton exchanged their wedding vows during
  his rookie season, in 1956; and
         WHEREAS, After injuries ended his career as a player, Mr.
  Smith came back to Texas with his wife and settled in San Angelo;
  for the next 36 years, he taught math, coached football and track,
  and served in administrative positions in the San Angelo
  Independent School District; his distinguished record in education
  and student athletics included a coaching role with the San Angelo
  Central High School Bobcats during their 1966 state championship
  year and a stint as head coach and athletic director with the San
  Angelo Lake View High School Chiefs from 1969 to 1972; he served as
  an assistant principal and as principal at John H. Glenn Middle
  School and later as purchasing director for the San Angelo ISD until
  his retirement in 1994; and
         WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Mr. Smith enjoyed the love
  and support of his wife and his family, which grew to include three
  children, Carl, Vin, and Deanne, as well as six grandchildren and a
  great-grandchild; and
         WHEREAS, Chuck Smith lived a full and generous life centered
  on his family and his community, and he will long be remembered with
  deep affection by all those who were privileged to know him; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Chuck Smith and
  extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his
  wife, Anne Smith; to his sons, Carl Smith and his wife, Terry, and
  Vin Smith; to his daughter, Deanne Goen, and her husband, Scot; to
  his grandchildren, Brad, Steven, Amanda, and Grady Smith, Chad
  Goen, and Jessica Rawls and her husband, Daniel; to his
  great-grandchild, Holly Anna Rawls; to his sister, Carla Phillips,
  and her husband, Herman; and to his other relatives and friends;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Chuck
  Smith.
