R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Members of Trinity United Methodist Church in
  Houston are joining together on March 3, 2013, to celebrate the
  148th anniversary of their church's founding; and
         WHEREAS, Organized in 1865, this historic congregation was
  one of the first African American churches in the Houston area
  following the Civil War; its building was financed by 25 members in
  1879 and provided a home to the congregation for 20 years before it
  was destroyed in the hurricane of 1900; members soon rebuilt, but
  lost that structure to a fire in the mid-1940s; and
         WHEREAS, The current sanctuary, located on the corner of
  Holman and Live Oak Streets, was completed in 1951, and the property
  has been expanded several times over the years; its stained glass
  windows are a unique feature that depict not only early Christian
  scenes but also key moments of the civil rights movement; and
         WHEREAS, Through the decades, Trinity UMC has benefited from
  the dedicated efforts of many outstanding clergymen, including its
  founding pastor, the Reverend Elias Dibble; today, that tradition
  of service continues under the direction of senior pastor
  Dr. Robert E. McGee; and
         WHEREAS, Members of this notable house of worship support a
  variety of commendable programs, among them a music ministry, a
  young adult Bible class, youth activities, and a Boy Scout troop;
  and
         WHEREAS, For nearly a century and a half, countless Houston
  residents have looked to Trinity United Methodist Church for
  spiritual enrichment and guidance, and it is a pleasure to join in
  honoring the church at this special time in its rich history; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 148th anniversary of the
  founding of Trinity United Methodist Church and extend to its
  congregation sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
