R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, A respected businessman and a beloved member of his |
|
community, Jose Angel Silva of El Paso passed away on August 24, |
|
2012, at the age of 90; and |
|
WHEREAS, Jose Silva was born on July 27, 1922, in the back of |
|
his father's grocery business in El Paso; he graduated from Bowie |
|
High School in 1942 and then served in the United States Army during |
|
World War II, participating in the invasion of Normandy and |
|
fighting in the Battle of the Bulge; highly decorated for his |
|
efforts, he received numerous honors, among them the |
|
European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with five Bronze |
|
Stars; and |
|
WHEREAS, Returning to his hometown, Mr. Silva went to work |
|
for his father at Silva's Super Market; they relocated the store to |
|
South Stanton Street in 1954, and the following year, Mr. Silva |
|
helped to found the Tri-State Associated Grocers, subsequently |
|
serving as treasurer of its board; he eventually took over the |
|
management of the store from his father and, much later, passed it |
|
on to his children; at the time of his death, Silva's remained the |
|
largest grocery store south of downtown El Paso; and |
|
WHEREAS, In addition to running the family business, Mr. |
|
Silva was involved in television, serving as a founding director of |
|
KINT-TV, which in 1980 was the largest Hispanic-owned station in |
|
the United States; he was also a proud Bowie alumnus who enjoyed |
|
supporting his alma mater; he took the lead on organizing and |
|
funding the purchase and installation of a monument on campus, and |
|
he was named the school's Outstanding Ex in 1991; through the years, |
|
he distinguished himself with his generosity and kindness toward |
|
others, and his quiet gestures made a positive difference in the |
|
lives of many people; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Silva shared a long and rewarding marriage with |
|
his high school sweetheart, Carmen Barragan Silva, and together |
|
they raised three children, Martin, Jose, and Cindy; moreover, they |
|
had the pleasure of welcoming into their family seven grandchildren |
|
and five great-grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Although Jose Silva is deeply missed, he leaves |
|
behind a record of service to his family and fellow citizens that |
|
will not soon be forgotten; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Jose A. Silva and |
|
extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: to his wife, |
|
Carmen Barragan Silva; to his children, Martin Silva and his wife, |
|
JoAnne, Jose A. Silva, Jr., and Cindy Manzanares and her husband, |
|
Robert; to his grandchildren, Lisa Rascon and her husband, Alex, |
|
Martin James Silva and his wife, Tricia, Monica Morales and her |
|
husband, Roy, Cristina Silva and her husband, Dan Dearborn, Jose A. |
|
Silva III, Sara Silva, and Cynthia Lopez; to his |
|
great-grandchildren, Aidan, Maura, Demetri, Victoria, and Martin |
|
Cristian; to his sister, Maria Luisa Holguin; and to his other |
|
relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Jose Silva. |
