R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Gainesville has been recognized by Rand McNally and |
|
USA Today as the most patriotic city in America; and |
|
WHEREAS, Participating in a highly competitive process, |
|
Gainesville was chosen from among 700 cities seeking recognition in |
|
the Best of the Road contest; one of six finalists in the most |
|
patriotic category, it won the title after Best of the Road judges |
|
visited the cities, observed the respect that Gainesville residents |
|
show for this nation in their everyday lives, witnessed the town's |
|
amazing parade honoring veterans, and appreciated the downtown |
|
displays of red, white, and blue; and |
|
WHEREAS, Gainesville has a deep connection with the military |
|
that dates back to World War II, when the United States Army chose |
|
it as the location for Camp Howze; named after Medal of Honor |
|
recipient Robert Lee Howze, the camp trained infantry soldiers |
|
essential to the war effort and provided job opportunities for the |
|
local population; and |
|
WHEREAS, Patriotism has remained an integral part of life in |
|
Gainesville since that time; the Medal of Honor Park at its entrance |
|
welcomes all past and present service members into the city, and |
|
every year, residents fund visits by Congressional Medal of Honor |
|
recipients from around the country; and |
|
WHEREAS, By honoring those who have made immeasurable |
|
sacrifices for the safety and security of our nation, the city of |
|
Gainesville and its residents set an inspiring example for this |
|
state and nation, and all involved in fostering this culture of |
|
patriotism are indeed deserving of special tribute; now, therefore, |
|
be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Gainesville on its selection by |
|
Rand McNally and USA Today as the most patriotic city in America; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the city of Gainesville as an expression of high regard |
|
by the Texas House of Representatives. |
