R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, For more than 15 years, Dia de la Mujer Latina has |
|
provided essential health services to underserved populations in |
|
Texas and beyond; and |
|
WHEREAS, Established by Venus Gines in 1997, Dia de la Mujer |
|
Latina is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving lives with |
|
preventive screenings and health education geared toward Latinas; |
|
through its one-day "health fiestas," DML screens uninsured or |
|
underinsured women for a variety of chronic illnesses, including |
|
cancer, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, and HIV; |
|
the group has served more than 84,000 women at such events since its |
|
inception; and |
|
WHEREAS, DML is recognized as a national best practice and is |
|
being replicated in 39 states, as well as in Puerto Rico; moreover, |
|
the group was approved in 2009 by the State of Texas to train and |
|
certify community health workers, or promotores, who assist |
|
patients, in English and Spanish, as they navigate the health care |
|
system; DML's record of achievement may be attributed to the vision |
|
and leadership of Ms. Gines, the group's communication and |
|
coordination with local organizations and state and local health |
|
departments, and the dedication and hard work of countless |
|
volunteers; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dia de la Mujer Latina has empowered numerous women |
|
to seek the health care they need, and in so doing, DML has made a |
|
positive difference in the lives of countless families; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Dia de la Mujer Latina for its outstanding |
|
work in behalf of women's health and extend to Venus Gines and all |
|
those associated with the organization sincere best wishes for |
|
continued success; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Dia de la Mujer Latina as an expression of high regard |
|
by the Texas House of Representatives. |
