R E S O L U T I O N
|

|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. David Daniel has rendered outstanding service |
|
|
as president of The University of Texas at Dallas, and it is indeed |
|
|
fitting to recognize the accomplishments of this distinguished |
|
|
educator; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Daniel earned his bachelor's, master's, and |
|
|
doctoral degrees from The University of Texas at Austin, where he |
|
|
joined the faculty after graduation and taught for 16 years; he |
|
|
moved to the University of Illinois in 1996 and eventually became |
|
|
that school's dean of engineering; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Since assuming his post at UTD in 2005, Dr. Daniel |
|
|
has presided over an exciting period of growth and expansion; the |
|
|
school has tripled its research expenditures, and 50 new degree |
|
|
programs have been created; in addition, university enrollment has |
|
|
increased by more than 50 percent, and Dr. Daniel has overseen $600 |
|
|
million of new construction, including a state-of-the-art Natural |
|
|
Science and Engineering Research Building; other areas on which he |
|
|
has focused include attracting top faculty and students, improving |
|
|
graduation rates, expanding diversity, and partnering with the |
|
|
community in research, the arts, technology, and other outreach |
|
|
programs; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Daniel has also given generously of his time and |
|
|
talents through his work as chair of the External Review Panel of |
|
|
the American Society of Civil Engineers and as president of The |
|
|
Academy of Medicine, Engineering, and Science of Texas; he was |
|
|
appointed to a committee investigating the Deepwater Horizon |
|
|
explosion and oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and he also serves on |
|
|
the board of directors of the Sandia National Laboratories and |
|
|
numerous Dallas-area organizations; in recognition of his |
|
|
achievements, he received the two highest honors of the American |
|
|
Society of Civil Engineers, the Norman Medal and the Croes Medal, |
|
|
and he has been elected to the prestigious National Academy of |
|
|
Engineering; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, The University of Texas at Dallas has gained |
|
|
immeasurably from Dr. Daniel's many contributions and will surely |
|
|
continue to benefit from his exemplary leadership and commitment to |
|
|
academic excellence in the years to come; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby commend Dr. David Daniel for his service as |
|
|
president of The University of Texas at Dallas and extend to him |
|
|
sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Dr. Daniel as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
