R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Byron Johnson of Waco has been named the 2013 Big
  Brother of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star; and
         WHEREAS, Dedicated to helping young people reach their
  potential, BBBS Lone Star serves more than 30,000 children in over
  100 Texas counties; the program pairs children, "littles," with
  screened volunteer mentors, "bigs," and monitors and supports these
  relationships as they develop; and
         WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson, the director of the Institute for
  Studies of Religion at Baylor University, has served as a big
  brother to Blake West for more than four years; his efforts have
  contributed to Blake's success in school, and he has encouraged
  Blake to set his sights on college; moreover, thanks in part to
  Dr. Johnson's guidance, Blake is working toward his goal of a
  career in law enforcement by volunteering as a member of the junior
  police academy; and
         WHEREAS, Having studied factors related to youth behavior in
  his research, Dr. Johnson believes in the power of organizations
  such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, and as he and his wife prepared
  for an empty nest, he decided to get involved; today, he is an
  enthusiastic recruiter for BBBS on the Baylor campus, where in
  addition to leading the institute, he is a distinguished professor
  of the social sciences and directs the Program on Prosocial
  Behavior; and
         WHEREAS, Byron Johnson has demonstrated outstanding
  commitment to his little brother in Big Brothers Big Sisters and to
  the goals of the program, and in so doing, he serves as a source of
  inspiration to all who know him; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Byron Johnson on being named the
  2013 Big Brother of the Year by Big Brothers Big Sisters Lone Star
  and extend to him sincere best wishes for continued success and
  happiness; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Johnson as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
