R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Dr. Stephen Garretson, a sixth-grade math teacher
  at River Valley Intermediate School in McGregor, has been chosen as
  a finalist for the 2013 Presidential Award for Excellence in
  Mathematics and Science Teaching; and
         WHEREAS, This prestigious award recognizes kindergarten
  through sixth-grade math and science teachers for innovation in the
  classroom; the awards program is administered by the National
  Science Foundation on behalf of the White House Office of Science
  and Technology Policy and involves a rigorous application process
  requiring the demonstration of outstanding classroom instruction
  skills and a deep mastery of content; and
         WHEREAS, One of only three math teachers selected as Texas
  finalists, Dr. Garretson has taught for two decades; he is known
  for engaging his students, regardless of their initial abilities or
  interest, in exploring and discovering the concepts, uses, and
  importance of math; and
         WHEREAS, Through his commitment, creativity, and
  resourcefulness, Dr. Stephen Garretson has exemplified the highest
  ideals of his profession, and he has inspired in many young Texans a
  love of learning that will serve them well throughout their lives;
  now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Stephen Garretson on his
  selection as a finalist for the 2013 Presidential Award for
  Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching and extend to him
  sincere best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Dr. Garretson as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
