R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Texas women of every age, culture, and socioeconomic |
|
background have made historic contributions to the growth and |
|
strength of this state in countless recorded and unrecorded ways; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Texas women have played and continue to play a |
|
critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of |
|
this state by making up a significant portion of the labor force |
|
inside and outside of the home; and |
|
WHEREAS, Texas women have been leaders in not only securing |
|
their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the |
|
abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial |
|
labor movement, the civil rights movement, the peace movement, and |
|
other movements, all of which create a more fair and just society |
|
for all; and |
|
WHEREAS, Women such as Ann Richards, the second woman to be |
|
elected as governor of Texas, Barbara Jordan, an African American |
|
politician and educator who altered the political landscape in |
|
Texas, Oveta Culp Hobby, the first director of the Women's Army |
|
Corps, and Emma Tenayuca, a leader of oppressed workers in the |
|
Mexican American community, have all made a lasting impression on |
|
Texas history; and |
|
WHEREAS, Though women have made significant advances, women |
|
still have great strides to make; and therefore, this legislature |
|
encourages future generations of women to find the courage and |
|
strength to continue to fight for women's rights; and |
|
WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of American |
|
women in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued |
|
in the literature, teaching, and study of American history; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize March as Women's History Month and |
|
celebrate the contributions made by women of the S |
|
tate of Texas. |
