H.R. No. 941

R E S O L U T I O N
WHEREAS, Texas women of every age, culture, and socioeconomic
background have made historic contributions to the growth and
  strength of this state in countless recorded and unrecorded ways;
  and
WHEREAS, Texas women have played and continue to play a
critical economic, cultural, and social role in every sphere of
this state by making up a significant portion of the labor force
inside and outside of the home; and
WHEREAS, Texas women have been leaders in not only securing
their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity, but also in the
abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement, the industrial
labor movement, the civil rights movement, the peace movement, and
other movements, all of which create a more fair and just society
  for all; and
WHEREAS, Women such as Ann Richards, the second woman to be
elected as governor of Texas, Barbara Jordan, an African American
politician and educator who altered the political landscape in
Texas, Oveta Culp Hobby, the first director of the Women's Army
Corps, and Emma Tenayuca, a leader of oppressed workers in the
Mexican American community, have all made a lasting impression on
  Texas history; and
WHEREAS, Though women have made significant advances, women
still have great strides to make; and therefore, this legislature
encourages future generations of women to find the courage and
strength to continue to fight for women's rights; and
WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of American
women in history has been consistently overlooked and undervalued
in the literature, teaching, and study of American history; now,
  therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby recognize March as Women's History Month and
celebrate the contributions made by women of the S
  tate of Texas.
