R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Teach For America Week is bringing leaders from a |
|
variety of sectors to serve as guest teachers across the Rio Grande |
|
Valley from March 18 to 22, 2013; and |
|
WHEREAS, Launched in 1990, Teach For America began with a |
|
charter corps of 500 recent college graduates committed to |
|
eliminating education inequality; by recruiting and training |
|
highly motivated educators, the organization has worked to bridge |
|
achievement gaps in some of the nation's most disadvantaged |
|
communities; and |
|
WHEREAS, Just one year after the founding of TFA, the program |
|
was established in the Rio Grande Valley, and since its inception, |
|
it has invited more than 1,200 professionals to teach at South Texas |
|
schools; moreover, some 29,000 area students are taught by |
|
dedicated TFA participants annually; and |
|
WHEREAS, Since 2008, Teach For America Rio Grande Valley has |
|
been guided by executive director Robert Carreon, who previously |
|
served as program director and as manager of teacher development |
|
and strategy; and |
|
WHEREAS, Teach For America Week was created in 1997 to allow |
|
some of the country's most accomplished individuals to share their |
|
knowledge and insight with students; business and community leaders |
|
visit classrooms to teach lessons based on their real-world |
|
experience in diverse fields; and |
|
WHEREAS, Teach For America Week underscores the vital |
|
importance of well-rounded, high-quality instruction, and it |
|
enables influential and engaged professionals to gain a greater |
|
understanding of educational challenges in community schools as |
|
they help children broaden their horizons; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby commemorate Teach For America Week in the Rio |
|
Grande Valley and extend to all those participating sincere best |
|
wishes for a rewarding event; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Teach For America Rio Grande Valley as an expression of |
|
high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
