R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Citizens from Titus County are gathering in Austin |
|
on March 20, 2013, to celebrate Titus County Day at the State |
|
Capitol; and |
|
WHEREAS, Set among the rolling timberlands of Northeast |
|
Texas, Titus County comprises 412 square miles and includes much |
|
prime farmland; the county has a population of more than 32,000, |
|
with the county seat and largest city, Mount Pleasant, representing |
|
a little less than half that total; and |
|
WHEREAS, Anglo settlers first moved into the area in the |
|
1840s, and in 1846 the county was officially established by the |
|
state legislature; named for Red River area pioneer Andrew Jackson |
|
Titus, it developed an agricultural economy, with corn and cotton |
|
the major food and cash crops; and |
|
WHEREAS, After taking on its present boundaries in 1875, the |
|
county remained mostly rural until the 1930s, when oil was |
|
discovered near Talco, and people increasingly moved to towns; at |
|
the same time, agricultural production began to shift from staple |
|
crop farming to livestock ranching; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today, the communities of Titus County are centers |
|
for health services, food processing, mining, and the manufacturing |
|
of trailer equipment, and timber harvesting is also important; |
|
Mount Pleasant, known as the hub of Northeast Texas, has been named |
|
a Texas Main Street City and one of the 100 Best Small Towns in |
|
America; and |
|
WHEREAS, The county's four largest lakes offer 17,000 acres |
|
of water sports and activities, and Lake Bob Sandlin State Park |
|
features hike and bike trails and campgrounds; largemouth bass are |
|
plentiful and fishing is a popular pastime among residents and |
|
visitors alike; the county's cultural venues include the Whatley |
|
Center for the Performing Arts at Northeast Texas Community |
|
College; and |
|
WHEREAS, Preserving the best of their heritage while looking |
|
forward to the opportunities that lie ahead, the citizens of Titus |
|
County are to be commended for their industrious spirit and for |
|
their continuing contributions to the vitality of the Lone Star |
|
State; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize March 20, 2013, as Titus County Day at |
|
the State Capitol and extend sincere best wishes to the visiting |
|
delegation for an informative and enjoyable stay in Austin. |
