R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The certain knowledge of a life well lived may
  comfort those saddened by the death of Herta B. Sokolyk of New
  Braunfels on January 4, 2013, at the age of 88; and
         WHEREAS, The former Herta Barbara Vollert was born on April
  14, 1924, in Schweinfurt, Germany; she was educated as an x-ray
  technician at a boarding school in Freiburg, and she later worked at
  the Schweinfurt city hospital during World War II; and
         WHEREAS, Following the war, Mrs. Vollert fell in love with
  Wasyl Sokolyk, a surgeon from the Ukraine, and the couple
  immigrated to the United States in 1952; they were married in
  Brooklyn in 1956, and later moved to Cleveland and Kansas City
  before settling in Kerrville in 1961; over the years, their family
  grew to include a son, Stephen, as well as three grandchildren; and
         WHEREAS, Mrs. Sokolyk was active in a number of
  organizations, including the Buck and Bull Club, the Kerr County
  Extension Homemakers, the German Club, and the local Republican
  Party; in addition, she was financial secretary for Hermann Sons
  Lodge No. 12 for a number of years, and she also volunteered her
  time as an election worker and as a thrift-shop employee for the
  Humane Society; and
         WHEREAS, After her husband passed away in 1989, Mrs. Sokolyk
  took frequent trips abroad and visited relatives and schoolmates in
  her home country; she moved to New Braunfels in 2006 to be closer to
  her son and his family; and
         WHEREAS, Herta Sokolyk was a woman of strength and compassion
  who remained engaged in the world throughout her life, and the joy
  she found in helping others will forever serve as an inspiration to
  her loved ones; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Herta Sokolyk and
  extend sincere sympathy to the members of her family: to her son,
  Stephen Sokolyk, and his wife, Beth; to her grandchildren, Katie,
  Alex, and Steffi; to her stepsister, Elisabeth Ludwig; and to her
  other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Herta
  Sokolyk.
