R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Jones Stadium at El Paso High School has been named
  one of the top 10 high school football venues in the nation by the
  MaxPreps sports website, and this recognition provides a welcome
  opportunity to acknowledge the history and significance of this
  venerable athletic field; and
         WHEREAS, Constructed in 1916, Jones Stadium was the first
  major concrete sports facility built in the country; known as "the
  Lady on the Hill," it sits at the foot of the Franklin Mountains and
  affords a magnificent view of central El Paso and Ciudad Juarez; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to serving as the home turf of the El
  Paso High Tigers for many decades, Jones Stadium has been the scene
  of other notable events; General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing once
  rode his horse into the stadium to commemorate the Allied victory in
  World War I, and in the late 1930s it played host to the first three
  Sun Bowl matchups; and
         WHEREAS, In 1993, work began on an extensive project to
  refurbish the venue, and today football fans and other visitors are
  able to appreciate a majestic 12,000-seat structure that retains
  the stately appearance it had when it was originally constructed;
  and
         WHEREAS, Jones Stadium has been an integral part of the rich
  tradition of high school football for nearly a century while also
  serving as a valuable showplace for the city of El Paso, and this
  classic field is indeed deserving of acclaim; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to Jones Stadium in El Paso on the
  event of its recognition as one of the top 10 high school football
  facilities in the country; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for El Paso High School as an expression of high regard by
  the Texas House of Representatives.
