R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Sergeant Major Shana Perez of Waco has been named
  the Division 4 Young Marine of the Year by the Young Marines youth
  organization; and
         WHEREAS, The Young Marines is a nonprofit initiative that
  promotes mental, moral, and physical development among young people
  by teaching the values of leadership, teamwork, and
  self-discipline; founded in 1959, the organization has grown to
  include more than 300 units with 10,000 youth participants and
  3,000 adult volunteers; each of its six divisions annually
  recognizes an outstanding member, and those honorees are invited to
  travel to Guam and Iwo Jima with the national director and others;
  the trip will take place in May 2013, when the national Young Marine
  of the Year will be chosen; and
         WHEREAS, A 15-year-old sophomore at Texas Christian Academy,
  Ms. Perez has been a member of the Young Marines since she was
  eight, and she holds the rank of sergeant major; she has
  participated in regimental and divisional encampments and in three
  leadership schools, and she has visited space camp in Huntsville,
  Alabama, as well as Hawaii during the 70th anniversary of the
  bombing of Pearl Harbor; and
         WHEREAS, Ms. Perez is one of five children, all of whom are
  active in the Young Marines; she is an avid basketball player and
  hopes to pursue the sport in college; and
         WHEREAS, Shana Perez has demonstrated maturity, good
  judgment, and dedication to her fellow Young Marines, and she may
  indeed take pride in this well-deserved accolade; now, therefore,
  be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Shana Perez on her selection as the
  2013 Division 4 Young Marine of the Year and extend to her sincere
  best wishes for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Ms. Perez as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
