R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, The fifth annual Early College High School Week is |
|
being observed March 25-30, 2013; and |
|
WHEREAS, Blending high school and college curricula, Early |
|
College High Schools offer traditionally underserved students an |
|
opportunity to earn as much as two years, or 60 hours, of college |
|
credit before receiving their diplomas; classes are available in |
|
all disciplines, while a special emphasis is placed on science, |
|
math, engineering, health care, biotechnology, and technology; and |
|
WHEREAS, The programs provide access to free higher education |
|
for first-generation college students, and participants receive |
|
intensive academic counseling to help them develop skills essential |
|
for success; in addition to increasing college attendance and |
|
completion rates, the schools aim to strengthen the connection |
|
between all educational levels while promoting a statewide |
|
college-going culture; and |
|
WHEREAS, A pioneer in opening the institutions, Texas serves |
|
more than 17,600 students in 59 Early College High Schools and 6 |
|
blended Early College High School/Texas Science, Technology, |
|
Engineering, and Mathematics (T-STEM) Academies; the Lone Star |
|
State has also played an integral role in shaping the development of |
|
the national early college initiative; and |
|
WHEREAS, Early College High Schools are contributing to the |
|
success of our state and nation, providing a new generation of |
|
college students with an outstanding education and a strong |
|
foundation for the future; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize March 25-30, 2013, as Early College |
|
High School Week and extend to all those associated with the schools |
|
sincere best wishes for continued success with their important |
|
work. |
