R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, The fifth annual Early College High School Week is
  being observed March 25-30, 2013; and
         WHEREAS, Blending high school and college curricula, Early
  College High Schools offer traditionally underserved students an
  opportunity to earn as much as two years, or 60 hours, of college
  credit before receiving their diplomas; classes are available in
  all disciplines, while a special emphasis is placed on science,
  math, engineering, health care, biotechnology, and technology; and
         WHEREAS, The programs provide access to free higher education
  for first-generation college students, and participants receive
  intensive academic counseling to help them develop skills essential
  for success; in addition to increasing college attendance and
  completion rates, the schools aim to strengthen the connection
  between all educational levels while promoting a statewide
  college-going culture; and
         WHEREAS, A pioneer in opening the institutions, Texas serves
  more than 17,600 students in 59 Early College High Schools and 6
  blended Early College High School/Texas Science, Technology,
  Engineering, and Mathematics (T-STEM) Academies; the Lone Star
  State has also played an integral role in shaping the development of
  the national early college initiative; and
         WHEREAS, Early College High Schools are contributing to the
  success of our state and nation, providing a new generation of
  college students with an outstanding education and a strong
  foundation for the future; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby recognize March 25-30, 2013, as Early College
  High School Week and extend to all those associated with the schools
  sincere best wishes for continued success with their important
  work.
