R E S O L U T I O N
|

|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Michael Dennis Hummel is retiring from Victoria |
|
|
College on May 12, 2013, bringing to a close nearly five decades of |
|
|
service as a history professor; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, A native of Victoria, Michael Hummel received an |
|
|
associate's degree from Victoria College in 1962, after which he |
|
|
transferred to Baylor University to study history and religion, |
|
|
earning a bachelor's degree with honors in 1964 and a master's |
|
|
degree the year after; he later resumed his education at North Texas |
|
|
State University and completed his doctorate in American history; |
|
|
and |
|
|
WHEREAS, In 1965, Dr. Hummel joined the history faculty at |
|
|
Victoria College; during his 48 years as an educator, he has been |
|
|
deeply involved in the development of academic and administrative |
|
|
policy through his service on a wide range of planning and advisory |
|
|
boards; he has chaired the Victoria College Academic Affairs |
|
|
Committee and the Victoria College Lyceum, and for 17 years he has |
|
|
served as president of the Victoria College Faculty Senate; he has |
|
|
also been an active member of the Texas Community College Teachers |
|
|
Association and has served on several of its committees; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, This esteemed educator has likewise been active in |
|
|
his community and has been particularly supportive of the local |
|
|
arts and music scene; a founding member of the boards of both the |
|
|
Victoria Symphony Society and the Victoria Bach Festival |
|
|
Association, he has held a multitude of leadership and |
|
|
administrative posts for both organizations; along with his |
|
|
involvement in cultural programs, he has worked with area |
|
|
organizations and committees in behalf of public schools, and he |
|
|
presently serves as a commissioner for the City of Victoria Parks |
|
|
and Recreation Department; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Hummel was named a Victoria College |
|
|
Distinguished Alumnus in 2008; the university further recognized |
|
|
his service by nominating him for the Piper Professor Award in 1994, |
|
|
1995, and 1998, and he has also been honored by the University of |
|
|
Houston-Victoria with a 2008-2009 Community Partnership Award and a |
|
|
1995 People Who Make a Difference Award; and |
|
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Michael Hummel's energy, expertise, and |
|
|
commitment to excellence have contributed significantly to the |
|
|
Victoria College community, and he may reflect with great pride on |
|
|
the legacy that he leaves behind; now, therefore, be it |
|
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
|
Legislature hereby congratulate Dr. Michael Dennis Hummel on his |
|
|
retirement from Victoria College and extend to him sincere best |
|
|
wishes for the future; and, be it further |
|
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
|
prepared for Dr. Hummel as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
|
House of Representatives. |
