R E S O L U T I O N
 
         WHEREAS, Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected as the
  266th Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on March 13,
  2013, and he has chosen the name Francis; and
         WHEREAS, Born on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Pope
  Francis is the first Jesuit to ascend to the papacy, as well as the
  first pope from the Americas and the Southern Hemisphere; the son of
  Italian immigrants, he graduated as a chemical technician before
  choosing the path of priesthood; while he was a Jesuit novice, he
  studied the humanities and completed degrees in philosophy and
  theology at the Colegio de San Jose before being ordained into the
  priesthood in 1969; and
         WHEREAS, In 1998, he was named archbishop of Buenos Aires, a
  diocese with more than three million inhabitants; while serving in
  that office, he became known for his personal humility, living in an
  apartment, cooking his own meals, and taking public transportation;
  as archbishop, he advocated for the poor and for social and economic
  justice and strove to promote an open and respectful interfaith
  dialogue; and
         WHEREAS, Archbishop Bergoglio was created a cardinal by Pope
  John Paul II in 2001, and one of his first acts was to ask the
  faithful not to travel to Rome to celebrate the event, but rather to
  donate what they would have spent on the journey to the poor; when
  Pope John Paul II passed away in 2005, Cardinal Bergoglio
  participated in the papal conclave that elected Pope Benedict XVI;
  and
         WHEREAS, After Pope Benedict announced his resignation in
  February of 2013, Cardinal Bergoglio was elected his successor on
  the second day of the conclave; he chose the name Francis in honor
  of St. Francis of Assisi, a man of peace who championed the poor;
  and
         WHEREAS, The Roman Catholic Church plays a vital role in the
  United States and throughout the world, and Pope Francis now
  carries on the work of leading its more than one billion followers
  and helping to advance human dignity and compassion; now,
  therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby honor His Holiness Pope Francis on the occasion
  of his election to the papacy; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Pope Francis as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
