R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, Memories of a life filled with joyful times and |
|
meaningful accomplishments remain to comfort the loved ones of |
|
George Wilson Chandler of Baytown, who passed away on March 8, 2013, |
|
at the age of 91; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Fernwood, Mississippi, on August 15, 1921, |
|
to Fannie and Charles Wesley Chandler, George Chandler later moved |
|
to Baytown, where he would graduate from Robert E. Lee High School |
|
in 1939; after graduation, he went on to serve with the United |
|
States Merchant Marine and then in the navy during World War II; and |
|
WHEREAS, Sent to The University of Texas at Austin for |
|
officer training, he earned a bachelor's degree and a law degree |
|
there and became a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity; his |
|
training also brought him to Harvard University, where he took |
|
graduate business courses and became a member of the famed Hasty |
|
Pudding Theatricals troupe; he returned to Baytown in 1949 to |
|
practice law, and over the course of his legal career, he spent 17 |
|
years as city attorney and maintained a private practice until his |
|
retirement in 1997; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Chandler was devoted to his wife, Freda, with |
|
whom he shared 65 years of marriage, and he adored his five |
|
children, Georgann, Catherine, Vivian, Steve, and Anita, and his |
|
nine grandchildren; he shared a love of athletics with his children |
|
and taught them how to surf, ski, and ice-skate when they were |
|
young, and he also enjoyed jogging and cycling; this notable |
|
gentleman was a dedicated civic leader as well; his charitable |
|
activities included raising funds for the Baytown YMCA and serving |
|
as its president, and together with his wife, he donated land to the |
|
city to establish Chandler Arboretum Park; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mr. Chandler enjoyed cheering on The University of |
|
Texas Longhorns, and he was an animal lover who had several pets; a |
|
man of many interests and talents, he trained to work as a |
|
phlebotomist, and also he became a master gardener and master |
|
naturalist; and |
|
WHEREAS, Though it is impossible to gauge the full effect of a |
|
man's life, some people leave their unmistakable mark on the world |
|
as they move through it, and George Chandler's contributions will |
|
long resonate in the lives of all who were privileged to know him; |
|
now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of George Wilson |
|
Chandler and extend sincere sympathy to the members of his family: |
|
to his wife, Freda Chandler; to his children, Georgann Schwamkrug, |
|
Catherine Mundinger and her husband, Dan, Vivian Treat and her |
|
husband, Mark, Steve Chandler and his wife, Patti, and Anita |
|
Chandler; to his grandchildren, Victor and Alison Schwamkrug, |
|
Samantha and Danny Mundinger, Casey Mundinger Barbles and her |
|
husband, Ryan, Leigh and Hannah Treat, and Steven and Emily |
|
Chandler; to his sister, Myrtle Walker; and to his other relatives |
|
and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of George |
|
Chandler. |
