R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories |
|
of Dr. Edward Durron Johnson of Houston, who passed away on |
|
November 7, 2011, at the age of 76; and |
|
WHEREAS, Born in Grand Junction, Colorado, on March 1, 1935, |
|
the son of Sidney Wood and Bessie Dodge Johnson, Eddie Johnson moved |
|
to San Antonio with his family in 1942 and then to Houston at the end |
|
of the Second World War; he attended Stephen F. Austin High School |
|
in the Bayou City and distinguished himself as an Eagle Scout, a |
|
varsity cheerleader, and a member of the swim team; and |
|
WHEREAS, Dr. Johnson subsequently headed to The University |
|
of Texas at Austin, where he joined the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity |
|
and the UT swim team; in 1957, he was named an All-American |
|
collegiate swimmer and recognized with the Bob Cone Memorial Team |
|
Spirit Award; after graduation, he returned to Houston to study at |
|
The University of Texas School of Dentistry, where he was a member |
|
of the Psi Omega fraternity; he worked as a lifeguard during dental |
|
school, and one day while on duty he met a young woman named Suzanne |
|
Schoenemann; the two were married in Brenham in 1959; and |
|
WHEREAS, For more than half a century, Dr. Johnson ran a |
|
successful dental practice in Houston; he also gave generously of |
|
his time to his community as a coach, Scout volunteer, and active |
|
member of Chapelwood United Methodist Church; in addition, he |
|
supported the Texas Swimming Association and his undergraduate |
|
fraternity, and he was recognized with awards from both |
|
organizations for his contributions over the years; in 1996, he was |
|
inducted into The University of Texas System Chancellor's Council; |
|
and |
|
WHEREAS, Along with vigorously cheering on his alma mater and |
|
its sports teams, Dr. Johnson enjoyed early morning handball games |
|
at the downtown Houston YMCA and spending time at his ranch in |
|
Giddings; and |
|
WHEREAS, In all of his endeavors, Dr. Johnson was supported |
|
by his loving wife, Suzanne, with whom he shared more than five |
|
decades of marriage before her passing; they became the parents of |
|
three adored children, Edward, Diane, and James, who joined his |
|
father's dental practice in 1991; Dr. Johnson ultimately saw his |
|
family grow to include seven grandchildren; and |
|
WHEREAS, Devoted to his family, profession, and community, |
|
Dr. Johnson led a rich and purposeful life, and he will always be |
|
remembered with great admiration and affection by all those who |
|
were privileged to know him; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Dr. Edward Durron |
|
Johnson and extend sincere condolences to the members of his |
|
family: to his children, Edward Durron Johnson, Jr., and his wife, |
|
Jean, James Burford Johnson and his wife, Martha, and Diane Johnson |
|
Taaffe and her husband, Peter; to his grandchildren, Hope, Sydney, |
|
and Sarah Margaret Johnson and Philip, Robert, Mary, and Michael |
|
Taaffe; to his mother-in-law, Ruth Schoenemann; to his |
|
brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Larry and Corliss Schoenemann; |
|
and to his other relatives and friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Edward |
|
Durron Johnson. |
