R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, For more than 70 years, families have come together
  to celebrate their faith at Garden Oaks Baptist Church in Houston;
  and
         WHEREAS, This notable institution was established by Brother
  T. T. Reynolds and by 57 charter congregants on September 28, 1941,
  at Garden Oaks Elementary School; the church was one of the first to
  be located in the Garden Oaks neighborhood, which was then on
  Houston's periphery; and
         WHEREAS, In 1944, the church purchased two lots on Shepherd
  Drive for the construction of a building, and soon after breaking
  ground in 1947, the congregation began holding services in the new
  structure; by 1950, church membership had swelled to more than 500,
  which led to the dedication of a larger sanctuary in 1954; and
         WHEREAS, Garden Oaks Baptist is led today by Pastor Jim
  Daniel, whose compassion, wisdom, and insight are a continuing
  source of inspiration to his congregation; the church offers a
  number of ministries and programs to meet the needs of its diverse
  membership and also engages in extensive outreach; its programs
  include a number that are tailored to youth, among them an early
  learning center that serves children of preschool age; and
         WHEREAS, For over seven decades, Garden Oaks Baptist Church
  has served as a source of strength and guidance to those who have
  worshiped there, and the church stands as a tribute to the faith and
  dedication of its members, both past and present, who have devoted
  their time, prayers, and resources to ensure its continued
  existence; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the 70th anniversary of Garden Oaks
  Baptist Church and extend to Pastor Jim Daniel and his congregation
  sincere best wishes for the future; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the church as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
