R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
|
WHEREAS, On March 14, 2013, the final buzzer sounded for |
|
beloved El Paso educator and longtime basketball coach Alvis Reed |
|
Glidewell, who won the admiration of many people over the course of |
|
his lifetime with his kind and winning ways; and |
|
WHEREAS, A native of Clovis, New Mexico, Alvis Glidewell |
|
became interested in basketball during his youth after his dad put |
|
up a hoop in the yard; he blossomed into a skilled athlete, and the |
|
lean young man who was known as "Bones" led his Clovis High School |
|
team to a state championship; he went on to play for Texas Western |
|
College and was team captain in 1956 and 1957, when the Miners won |
|
back-to-back Border Conference titles; and |
|
WHEREAS, After serving in the U.S. Army, he embarked on a |
|
successful high school coaching career in El Paso that spanned 29 |
|
years; he ably guided the teams at Austin and Irvin High Schools, |
|
compiling a record of 570 wins and 323 losses and winning seven |
|
district titles; his squads reached the state playoffs 11 times and |
|
made the "Sweet 16" on three occasions; an excellent classroom |
|
instructor as well, he taught mathematics and inspired his students |
|
with his passion for the subject; and |
|
WHEREAS, Renowned as a fierce competitor, Coach Glidewell |
|
nonetheless possessed the qualities of a true sportsman, showing |
|
respect for his opponents and demonstrating a humble attitude in |
|
victory or defeat; the kindness he demonstrated toward everyone he |
|
met earned him many admirers, and he was greeted with affectionate |
|
shouts of "Coach!" wherever he went; and |
|
WHEREAS, For his athletic achievements, Coach Glidewell was |
|
inducted into the El Paso Athletic Hall of Fame in 1998, and he |
|
later served as the president of the hall of fame and as a member of |
|
the executive committee; in addition, he was honored during a UTEP |
|
Legends halftime program in 2013; and |
|
WHEREAS, In all his endeavors, he enjoyed the love and |
|
support of his wife, Martha, with whom he shared 47 years of |
|
marriage and raised two daughters, Trisha and Lana; after his |
|
retirement in 1994, he enjoyed traveling and attending UTEP dinner |
|
theater performances with Mrs. Glidewell, but his competitive fires |
|
continued to burn bright; he took up the game of bridge and was just |
|
three points shy of Silver Life Master status at the time of his |
|
death; and |
|
WHEREAS, An individual who enriched the lives of countless |
|
people in his roles as a coach and teacher, Alvis Glidewell was |
|
equally admired as a caring husband, father, and friend, and |
|
memories of his warmth and generosity will forever remain a source |
|
of inspiration for those who had the good fortune to know him; now, |
|
therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby pay tribute to the life of Alvis Reed Glidewell |
|
and extend sincere condolences to the members of his family: to his |
|
wife, Martha; to his daughters, Trisha Lavan and her husband, Paul, |
|
and Lana Harris and her husband, Paul; to his grandchildren, Wyland |
|
and Coda Harris; to his numerous nieces and nephews; and to his |
|
other relatives and many friends; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for his family and that when the Texas House of |
|
Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Alvis |
|
Glidewell. |
