R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The Newton Garden Club celebrated the 50th
  anniversary of its founding in 2012; and
         WHEREAS, Established by 39 charter members, the Newton Garden
  Club was led by president Helen Syler when it held its inaugural
  meeting at First United Methodist Church in September 1962; today,
  the organization continues to affirm the original purpose laid out
  in the bylaws to "stimulate the love of gardening, encourage home
  and community beautification, promote better horticultural
  practices, and to encourage all forms of conservation"; and
         WHEREAS, Each year, the garden club hosts a flower show where
  area residents enjoy showcasing their projects; members have worked
  to beautify the city by planting and maintaining gardens at the
  county courthouse and  at the Powell Hotel Museum, where they placed
  a plaque to honor those who have served in our nation's military; in
  addition, the group has planted more than 2,000 daffodils, which
  bring vibrant color to the community each year; and
         WHEREAS, For half a century, the Newton Garden Club has
  provided its members an opportunity to set aside their daily cares
  and enjoy the happiness found in creating a thing of beauty, and
  through their efforts, they have brightened the lives of their
  fellow residents; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby honor the Newton Garden Club on the 50th
  anniversary of its founding and extend to its members best wishes
  for continued success; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the group as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
