H.R. No. 1516

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, The Texas House of Representatives is widely
acknowledged as the preeminent legislative body in Anglo-American
  parliamentary law; and
WHEREAS, The rich history of the Texas House of
Representatives, from 1846 to the present time, not only is
composed of the written words in our journals, bills, and
resolutions, but also is contained in the memories of each member of
  the Texas House; and
WHEREAS, On this Speaker's Reunion Day, we are reminded that
the passage of time has silenced the voices of several house members
who have contributed to the rich and unique heritage and history of
the Texas House of Representatives; and
WHEREAS, For an institution as important in the development
of the progress of both this state and this nation, it is fitting
that all portions of our history, both oral and written, should be
  preserved; and
WHEREAS, A group of institutions of higher education and oral
historians have convened together to immortalize the memories of
those who served in this body, for both historical and research
purposes; with the cooperation of the Legislative Reference
Library, the following institutions have joined in an effort to
create the Texas House Oral History Advisory Council: Humanities
Texas, the University of Houston, The University of Texas at El
Paso, the University of North Texas, The University of Texas at San
Antonio, Texas Tech University, Texas State University, The
University of Texas at Austin, the Lyndon B. Johnson School of
Public Affairs, the Dolph Briscoe Center for American History, and
the Portal to Texas History; and
WHEREAS, The following oral historians have gathered at the
Capitol during this reunion to capture the first oral histories,
and in so doing are pioneering this mission: Gregg Michel of The
University of Texas at San Antonio, Kristine Navarro-McElhaney of
The University of Texas at El Paso, Sam Spahn of the LBJ School of
Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, Erica
Whittington of Humanities Texas, and Nancy Beck Young of the
University of Houston; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby express its deep appreciation to each of the
institutions in their efforts to preserve and protect the memories
that will serve as an invaluable source for future generations and
extend to them all sincere best wishes for success; and, be it
  further
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby commend all the participants who are devoting
their time to this extremely worthwhile undertaking that will
enrich the annals of Texas history.
