R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The record-breaking heat, wildfires, and drought of |
|
recent years have highlighted the unreliability of our state's |
|
traditional sources of water, and desalination represents an |
|
innovative potential solution to this shortage; and |
|
WHEREAS, Many Texas lakes and reservoirs are recording levels |
|
far below average, and rainfall is predicted to fall below normal |
|
over the next two decades; this situation could have profound |
|
effects on the state's safety and economy; and |
|
WHEREAS, The Texas Desalination Association was created in |
|
response to these conditions; it promotes a recycling process by |
|
which freshwater is created from the state's 2.7 billion acre-feet |
|
of brackish groundwater and from the inexhaustible salt water in |
|
the Gulf of Mexico; and |
|
WHEREAS, The group brings together the combined knowledge and |
|
skills of water engineers, hydrologists, and water recyclers to |
|
help provide solutions for residential and commercial water |
|
consumers as well as city and county governments; today, 52 |
|
desalination facilities are already in operation, with another 35 |
|
slated to be brought online over the next three decades, and |
|
techniques such as reverse osmosis promise to provide water at the |
|
highest standards of treatment; and |
|
WHEREAS, The continuing growth and prosperity of the Lone |
|
Star State depend on a diversification of the state's sources of |
|
water, and the efforts of the Texas Desalination Association to |
|
promote the benefits of this cutting-edge technology are truly |
|
worthy of recognition; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby recognize April 23, 2013, as Texas Desalination |
|
Day and extend to the members of the Texas Desalination Association |
|
sincere best wishes for continued success in their important work; |
|
and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for the Texas Desalination Association as an expression of |
|
high regard by the Texas House of Representatives. |
