R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, The city of Carrollton is celebrating its 100th
  anniversary in 2013; and
         WHEREAS, Incorporated as a general law city on June 14, 1913,
  Carrollton was first settled in the 1840s by pioneers who purchased
  land from the Peters Colony; many early residents hailed from
  Carrollton, Illinois, and most local historians believe they chose
  the same name for their new home; in 1878, the name was made
  official with the opening of the town's first post office; and
         WHEREAS, The Dallas-Wichita Railroad arrived in 1879, and the
  advent of the Cotton Belt line nine years later spurred the
  agricultural community's development as a shipping center for
  livestock, grain, cotton, and cottonseed; by 1908, three railroads
  served Carrollton, and the Texas Interurban Railway later arrived
  to provide electric train passenger service between Dallas and
  Denton; and
         WHEREAS, In the early 20th century, the gravel industry
  contributed to the diversity of the local economy, and the town
  became important to the dairy and brick industries as well; growth
  began to accelerate in the 1960s as North Texas flourished, and
  between 1970 and 1980, Carrollton's population nearly doubled to
  more than 40,000; and
         WHEREAS, Carrollton today is a vibrant community with more
  than 120,000 residents and over 5,000 businesses in a variety of
  sectors, among them manufacturing, construction, wholesale trades,
  finance, insurance, and real estate; committed to promoting a high
  quality of life, the city is making $90 million in improvements to
  public infrastructure, and its initiatives include a $1.5 million
  tree-planting program along major boulevards and enhancements for
  parks and walking and biking trails; and
         WHEREAS, While marking a significant milestone in its
  history, Carrollton is also investing in the future, and residents
  may take justifiable pride in the rich heritage and continuing
  prosperity of their community; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby commemorate the centennial of the city of
  Carrollton and extend sincere best wishes to its citizens for a
  meaningful and enjoyable observance; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for the city as an expression of high regard by the Texas
  House of Representatives.
