H.R. No. 1556

R E S O L U T I O N

WHEREAS, In an extraordinary display of courage and
dedication to duty, Deputy Arthur Senteno of the Washington County
Sheriff's Office willingly risked his life to rescue an elderly man
from a burning home on March 2, 2013; and
WHEREAS, Early that morning, Deputy Senteno responded to a
9-1-1 call from the man's wife, who told the dispatcher that her
husband had gone back into their residence to rescue their dog; and
WHEREAS, Flames were shooting nine feet over the roof when
Deputy Senteno arrived, and while a volunteer firefighter hastened
into his protective gear, the deputy entered the house through the
front door, which was ablaze, calling out for the man; and
WHEREAS, Crouching in the dense smoke with burning pieces of
the ceiling falling around him, Deputy Senteno located the man and
asked him if his wife was also in the house; the man was confused, so
the deputy forced him out the back door of the house, then went back
inside to look for the wife; and
WHEREAS, Driven out again by the heat and smoke, Deputy
Senteno found the man talking to his wife, who was sitting in their
SUV, so he compelled the man to get into the car and ordered the
couple to drive away from the house; he then entered the smoke again
briefly to look for the dog, until, his throat and lungs burning, he
escaped just before he was ready to pass out; and
WHEREAS, In the end, the couple were saved, and the brave
deputy was treated for smoke inhalation and released; the dog was
safe as well, having made its own way out of the fire; and
WHEREAS, In placing himself in harm's way to save the life of
another, Deputy Senteno embodied the highest ideals of the law
enforcement profession, and he is indeed deserving of special
recognition for his remarkable act of valor; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
Legislature hereby commend Deputy Arthur Senteno for his heroism in
rescuing a man from a house fire and extend to him sincere best
wishes for continued success with his important work; and, be it
  further
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
prepared for Deputy Senteno as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
