R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Texas Southern University is awarding an honorary
  doctorate of humane letters to Michael Strahan during its spring
  commencement exercises on May 11, 2013; and
         WHEREAS, Born in Houston, Mr. Strahan spent most of his youth
  in Germany, where his father was stationed in the U.S. Army; he
  returned to the United States during his high school years and then
  enrolled at TSU on a football scholarship; in his senior year, he
  recorded a school-record 19 sacks and 62 tackles, and he was named a
  first-team All-American; and
         WHEREAS, After graduating from TSU in 1992, Mr. Strahan
  embarked on an impressive 15-year career in the National Football
  League playing defensive end for the New York Giants; in 2001, he
  broke the 18-year-old NFL single-season sack record, an achievement
  that has yet to be bested; that same year, he was named the NFL
  Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated and the Defensive Player of
  the Year by the Associated Press; in 2007, his final season, he
  helped lead the Giants to a Super Bowl victory over the New England
  Patriots; and
         WHEREAS, An engaging media personality as well as a skilled
  athlete, Mr. Strahan has starred in numerous television programs
  since retiring from the NFL; he currently works as a sports
  commentator for Fox NFL Sunday, and every weekday morning, he
  cohosts the Emmy-winning talk show LIVE with Kelly and Michael; and
         WHEREAS, In addition to his professional commitments,
  Mr. Strahan supports numerous charities, including St. Jude's
  Children's Research Hospital, the USO, Walter Reed Army Medical
  Center, and the Fresh Air Fund; with Mayor Cory Booker of Newark,
  New Jersey, he created the Newark Mentoring Movement to benefit
  young people in the city; and
         WHEREAS, Michael Strahan's successes on and off the field are
  a source of great pride to the Texas Southern University community,
  and this multitalented alumnus is indeed deserving of this
  prestigious award; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby congratulate Michael Strahan on his receipt of
  an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Texas Southern
  University and extend to him sincere best wishes for the future;
  and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for Mr. Strahan as an expression of high regard by the
  Texas House of Representatives.
