R E S O L U T I O N
|
|
WHEREAS, The wisdom and experience of centenarians are a |
|
source of enduring inspiration, and it is indeed a pleasure to honor |
|
Ruby Lee Martin Beebe of Kermit for joining this elite group of |
|
Texans on April 29, 2013; and |
|
WHEREAS, The former Ruby Martin was born to George and Maggie |
|
Martin in South Bend, Texas, in 1913; she grew up in the company of |
|
two brothers and four sisters and came to understand the value and |
|
virtue of hard work at an early age; she helped her family to farm |
|
cotton and raise livestock and garden produce, and she learned to |
|
sew, quilt, cook, and can; her skill as a seamstress was widely |
|
recognized, and expectant mothers in the area treasured the baby |
|
clothes and quilts she made for them; and |
|
WHEREAS, Mrs. Beebe survived the Spanish flu pandemic in 1918 |
|
and later helped her family during the Great Depression by |
|
collecting pecans and fishing from the Brazos River; while still in |
|
school, she raised chickens and won a free trip to Fort Worth for |
|
her poultry entry at the Young County Fair; she also distinguished |
|
herself with her athletic ability and became a star on South Bend's |
|
championship basketball team; and |
|
WHEREAS, She met her husband, Paul Beebe, in 1930, and the |
|
couple shared more than six happy decades of marriage before his |
|
passing in 1992; over the years, they resided in New Mexico, as well |
|
as in Denver City and Kermit, Texas, as Mr. Beebe held a series of |
|
jobs with El Paso Natural Gas, and they raised three sons, Martin, |
|
Paul, and Claude, and a daughter, Alice; Mrs. Beebe's excellent |
|
cooking and baking skills were prized by her husband and children, |
|
and her German chocolate cake and chocolate chip cookies were |
|
special favorites; and |
|
WHEREAS, Respected for her generosity and her involvement in |
|
community activities, Mrs. Beebe took part in a variety of church |
|
functions in the towns where she lived, participating in Sunday |
|
school, Bible classes, and quilting groups; she also made it a point |
|
to support soldiers by sending care packages to those serving |
|
overseas; and |
|
WHEREAS, Today, Mrs. Beebe's family has grown to include 14 |
|
grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 29 |
|
great-great-grandchildren; blessed with their affection and |
|
sustained by her strong faith, she has gracefully reached the |
|
century mark and continues to enrich the lives of all who are |
|
fortunate enough to know her; now, therefore, be it |
|
RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas |
|
Legislature hereby honor Ruby Lee Martin Beebe on the joyous |
|
occasion of her 100th birthday and extend to her sincere best wishes |
|
for continued happiness; and, be it further |
|
RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be |
|
prepared for Mrs. Beebe as an expression of high regard by the Texas |
|
House of Representatives. |
