R E S O L U T I O N
         WHEREAS, Family and friends will long cherish their memories
  of Stella Marion Hawes of Mineral Wells, who passed away on August
  27, 2012, at the age of 91; and
         WHEREAS, Born to Joseph and Ruth Petri on October 24, 1920, in
  Maceo, Kentucky, the former Marion Petri attended Daviess County
  schools and graduated as valedictorian of her class; she married
  the love of her life, Samuel Arthur Hawes, on July 3, 1942, and with
  him shared a rewarding relationship that was blessed with two
  children; and
         WHEREAS, During World War II, Mrs. Hawes worked at a
  walkie-talkie assembly plant while her husband served with the
  U.S. Army Air Forces in the North African theater; she accompanied
  him when he was transferred to California to train pilots, and it
  was there that exhilarating flights in a P-38 piloted by her husband
  inspired her lifelong passion for flying; she eventually attained a
  pilot's license herself; and
         WHEREAS, The couple moved to Austin after the war, and
  Mrs. Hawes worked at Balcones Research Center while Mr. Hawes
  attended The University of Texas; they later settled in Mineral
  Wells, where they worked together to build a successful clay tile
  plant; in addition to devoting herself to her home and her family,
  Mrs. Hawes served as a den mother for her sons' Cub Scout troop and
  assumed an active role in PTA and booster club events; she also
  organized blood drives and helped change the city charter to
  mandate a city manager form of government; moreover, Mrs. Hawes was
  a charter member of the forerunner of today's Palo Pinto General
  Hospital Healthcare Auxiliary Foundation; and
         WHEREAS, Intelligent, with a strong sense of duty and a
  sometimes unexpected sense of humor, this delightful woman counted
  cooking, gardening, camping, and playing bridge and chess among her
  favorite pastimes; she was also a talented pianist and artist; and
         WHEREAS, Marion Hawes possessed a generosity of spirit that
  expressed itself in myriad ways, and she will forever hold a
  treasured place in the hearts of all those who had the good fortune
  to know her; now, therefore, be it
         RESOLVED, That the House of Representatives of the 83rd Texas
  Legislature hereby pay tribute to the memory of Stella Marion Hawes
  and extend sympathy to the members of her family: to her sons, Doug
  Hawes and Dave Hawes; to her grandchildren, Ali Hawes Buhay and Josh
  Hawes; and to her other relatives and friends; and, be it further
         RESOLVED, That an official copy of this resolution be
  prepared for her family and that when the Texas House of
  Representatives adjourns this day, it do so in memory of Stella
  Marion Hawes.
